Jim DiMatteo is a retired naval aviator, international speaker, and one of the most prominent figures in aviation and air sports. During his 25-year career in the U.S. Navy, he logged over 5,500 flight hours across five different fighter aircraft and commanded TOPGUN adversary squadrons on both coasts. Currently, he serves as the Race Director for the Red Bull Air Races and Vice President of Flight Operations for the world’s largest aviation event, EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. His career is a testament to leadership, precision, and dedication.
As a naval fighter pilot, Jim DiMatteo mastered some of the most advanced aircraft in the world and led highly demanding aviation programs, including overseeing the TOPGUN adversary program. As the Race Director for Red Bull Air Races, he designed unique air tracks in iconic locations like New York, London, Abu Dhabi, and Rio de Janeiro, maintaining a flawless safety record over 75 global events.
Jim also revitalized AirVenture Oshkosh, coordinating historic air shows such as the first-ever demonstration by the USAF Thunderbirds at this event. Additionally, he served as Director of the Breitling Jet Team American Tour, the first U.S. tour of an international jet team, reaching over 50 million viewers.
In 2018, he was inducted into the Aviation Hall of Fame for his lifetime achievements. His “debrief culture,” promoting continuous improvement through feedback, has been a cornerstone of his success.
