About the Expert

Who Is Nicholas Negroponte?

Nicholas Negroponte is a world-renowned technology visionary with a deep understanding of technology and its impact on business and society. As an exceptional speaker, his vast experience and profound knowledge of digitalization make him a leading authority on the transformations that shape our future. Negroponte is a pioneer of new media and the driving force behind One Laptop per Child (OLPC), a nonprofit organization aimed at providing children worldwide with new opportunities to explore and express themselves through computers.

What is his Background?

After earning two architecture degrees at MIT, Negroponte joined its faculty in 1966. Leveraging his extensive research in computer graphics and computer-aided design, he founded the MIT Architecture Machine Group, a lab and think tank dedicated to exploring new approaches to human-computer interaction. Later, he founded MIT’s iconic Media Lab in 1985, one of the world’s leading interdisciplinary research centers, known for its unique approach to visualizing the impact of emerging technologies on everyday life. Negroponte was also the first investor in *WIRED* magazine and authored the bestseller *Being Digital*, which has been translated into 40 languages and is a seminal work on the convergence of interaction, entertainment, and information. He was TED’s inaugural speaker and has since spoken at the conference multiple times.

Perhaps his most notable achievement is his nonprofit project, OLPC, which aims to provide durable, affordable laptops to children in developing countries. Believing that a nation’s most valuable resource is its children, OLPC began in Cambodia and, by 2005, unveiled the first $100 laptop designed for children. This program has since distributed XO laptops to two million children in over 40 countries, from Haiti and Afghanistan to Rwanda and Mongolia. In addition to his academic and philanthropic contributions, Negroponte has invested in multiple tech ventures, including Skype and Ambient Devices, reinforcing his influential role in the digital world.
