Ismael Cala is a journalist, radio and TV producer and personality, journalist, inspirational author, speaker and renowned columnist.
He heads the primetime and #1 CNN en Español show, “Cala”. He interviews in a very unique, personal, provocative and sometimes confrontational style famous and everyday people from politicians to writers, philosophers, artists, celebrities, scientists and sports stars.
Cala has over twenty years’ broadcasting experience in Cuba, Canada, the United States and Mexico. His profile is particularly high amongst the Hispanic communities of Canada and the United States. Across the rest of the American continent, Cala has achieved fame and success on CNN en Español with his program “Cala” which is broadcasts daily by the network to millions of viewers throughout the continent. He has also appeared as a presenter and journalist in highly-rated programs in the United States, such as “Despierta América” on the Univision network, and Nancy Grace’s “HLN” (previously known as CNN Headline News).
The first book in his series CALA Contigo, “El Poder de Escuchar” (The Power of Listening) releases in September of 2013. His tours as a motivational and professional speaker and lecturer have taken him to countries such as Colombia, Mexico, Guatemala, Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Peru, Canada, Ecuador, Panama, Venezuela, Argentina and the Unites States, among others.
The New York Times has named Cala and “the Larry King of the Hispanic world.”
Before joining CNN en Español, Cala hosted América TV program “Calando Fuerte” from Miami. From November 2007 hosted the morning radio program on Mega 94.9, “Ismael Cala y la Jungla de la Mañana”. Before this, Cala hosted the program “Calando a…”, a series of biographical features on TLN (Tele-latino Network de Toronto). He also hosted series such as “Fiesta Olé” and “Viva Auto” on the same network. In April 2008 he became the presenter of an evening variety show on Televisa’s “Canal de las Estrellas”’ in Mexico.
During his career at CNN en Español, he has anchored weekend morning news bulletins, produced and presented the weekly show “El Mundo Informa”. Additionally, Cala has presented other newscasts, and has handled special assignments for the network. As an anchor based in Atlanta, he has covered various global events, such as the trial and death of Saddam Hussein, the final days of Pope John Paul II, and Venezuela’s 2004 referendum. More recently, Cala was the journalist who broke the story of the arrest and deportation of the president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya. As a reporter, he has covered a wide range of stories, including Canada’s SARS epidemic in 2003, hurricane Frances in Florida, and the visit by Pope John Paul II to Canada in 2002.
For over two years, Ismael has hosted his own primetime show, “CALA”, which is broadcast throughout the Americas. He has interviewed the former President of Chile Michelle Bachelet, singer Gloria Estefan, entrepreneur Emilio Estefan, Nobel Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Menchú, President of Ecuador Rafael Correa, former President of Colombia Álvaro Uribe, Peruvian writer and political commentator Álvaro Vargas Llosa, world-renown designer Carolina Herrera, and dozens of writers, sport figures, politicians and artists including Jennifer López, Pitbull, Olga Tañon, Don Francisco, Susana Giménez, Desmond Child, Arturo Sandoval, Paloma San Basilio, Andrea Bocceli, as well as the current President of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos, current President of Panama Ricardo Martinelli, Republican senator Marco Rubio, and many others.
