Arthur Holland Michel is a Peruvian-born writer and researcher specialized in drones, surveillance systems and artificial intelligence, among other topics. As an author he has written for Wired, Vice, Foreign Policy, The Atlantic, The Verge, Fast Company, Motherboard, Al Jazeera America, Bookforum, Mashable Spotlight, and an Oxford Research Encyclopedia. In 2012, he became the founder and co-director of the Center of the Study of the Drone, an interdisciplinary research institution based at Bard College which researches and examines the various challenges and opportunities stemming from the increasing use of unmanned technology systems, both in the military and civilian sphere. Among the many ongoing research programs carried out by the institution, some notable ones are counter-drone systems, drones in public safety and defense spending on drones.
Arthur Holland Michel’s first book, ‘Eyes in the Sky: The Secret Rise of Gorgon Stare and How It Will Watch Us All’, was published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in June 2019. ‘Eyes in the Sky’ revolves around the fascinating history and unnerving future of high-tech aerial surveillance, covering every aspect from its military origins to its use in monitoring the American population.
As a speaker, Arthur Holland Michel employs his expertise in the area of technology to share his knowledge on artificial intelligence or big data among others. In addition, his talks also revolve around the transformation of societies regarding the introduction of modern surveillance systems and state of the art AI, as well as the use by governments of drone technology, both in warfare and as public monitoring tools. He is also versed in the intelligence algorithms which regulate the functioning and decision-making of autonomous weaponry and their implications for modern warfare.
Arthur Holland Michel completed a Bachelor of Arts in Historical Studies and Written Arts at Bard College in New York State in 2013.
