Afonso Seixas Nunes is a Professor of Law at Saint Louis University School of Law (USA) and a Jesuit priest since 2010. Born in Porto, he combines a solid academic background with deep ethical reflection on the challenges of the contemporary world, particularly in the fields of international law, artificial intelligence, and armed conflicts. His research focuses on the impact of new technologies on the battlefield and on the exploration of outer space by non-state actors.
He holds a Law degree from the Portuguese Catholic University and pursued further studies in Philosophy (UCP Braga) and Theology (Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome). He obtained a Master’s degree in Law from the London School of Economics and completed his PhD at the University of Essex, with a dissertation on Legitimacy and Responsibility for the Use of Autonomous Weapons Systems under International Humanitarian Law, published by Cambridge University Press in 2022. He was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Institute for Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict (ELAC) at the University of Oxford. Since 2021, he has been a faculty member at SLU Law (USA) and collaborates regularly with academic and cultural institutions.
