Mario Monti began his professional trajectory in academia, studying at Bocconi University and Yale University under Nobel laureate James Tobin. He served as a professor of economics at the University of Turin from 1970 to 1985 before returning to Bocconi. In 1994, he transitioned to European governance after being appointed European Commissioner. He served as Commissioner for Internal Market until 1999 and subsequently as Competition Commissioner until 2004, where he gained global prominence for taking antitrust action against tech monopolies like Microsoft and blocking high-profile corporate megamergers like General Electric and Honeywell.
Monti was Prime Minister of Italy from 2011 to 2013 and also served as Minister of Economy and Finance. He was a European Commissioner for the internal market and later for competition, where he oversaw major cases like GE/Honeywell and Microsoft, and led antitrust reforms. He taught economics and served as rector at Bocconi University. He has advised governments in Italy, the UK and France on critical reforms. He studied at Bocconi and completed graduate work at Yale University.
