Joan Clos, born in Barcelona, is a widely recognized leader in public service and diplomacy. As Mayor of Barcelona (1997–2006), he led major urban transformation projects. Later, as Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), he championed sustainable urban policies worldwide. Joan Clos began his political career as a city councilor in Barcelona (1983–1987), eventually becoming the city’s mayor. During his tenure, he implemented landmark urban rehabilitation initiatives. He also served as President of Metropolis and the United Cities and Local Governments organization. Nationally, he was Spain’s Minister of Industry, Tourism, and Trade, and later appointed Ambassador to Turkey and Azerbaijan.
