About the Expert

Who is Kailash Satyarthi?

Kailash Satyarthi is one of the world’s leading voices for children’s rights and dignity. A social reformer and passionate activist, his mission is to eliminate child labor and secure universal access to education. Founder of multiple international movements and organizations, he has driven systemic change to protect the most vulnerable, working across borders in a way few grassroots movements ever manage. He is currently leading global efforts to end violence against children and to build a world where every child can live freely and safely, work recognized with the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize, which he shared with fellow education advocate Malala Yousafzai.

What is his background?

For over 40 years, Kailash Satyarthi has been at the forefront of child protection, rescuing more than 100,000 children from bonded labor, slavery, and trafficking. He founded Bachpan Bachao Andolan, led the Global March Against Child Labor, and pushed for the universal ratification of ILO Convention 182, the international treaty that defined and banned the worst forms of child labor worldwide. He established GoodWeave to certify child-labor-free carpets and successfully advocated for India’s constitutional amendment ensuring free education. Appointed SDG Advocate by the UN in 2021, he continues to influence global policy and inspire action toward the child-labor targets embedded in the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. His awards include the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award and the Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice, alongside recognition from governments and civil-society organizations across dozens of countries.
